My Favorite Podcasts for Learning Japanese

Podcasts can be a fantastic way to study various facets of Japanese, whether you are looking for a refresher on pronunciation of vocabulary, or want to experience what a typical conversation in Japanese might feel like. There is no shortage of podcasts out there, and these are simply a few that I have utilized in my language study. I find that having a variety is useful, as many of these podcasts focus on different ways of learning Japanese, and are all unique in their own way! All of these podcasts can be found on Spotify, and can be accessed via the links below.

This is a page that will be continually updated with new podcasts and additional information. If you have any podcasts that you'd like to see on this list, send me a message!

Grammar

What would I do with out Sato-sensei! This is a fantastic way to brush up on Japanese grammar, and has been incredibly helpful in my personal studies. Episodes focus on a specific aspect of the language (particles, verb conjugation, te-form, and so much more), explaining the grammatical makeup, usage in conversation, examples, and more! The instruction is concise and well done, and I find this podcast to be an especially great resource when I need to refresh my knowledge on a certain topic or concept! Episodes are 2-7 minutes long.
Masa-sensei's podcast is quite similar to Japanese Grammar Tips, and is equally as useful! The structure of episodes are similar, with a focus on specific grammar concepts, but I find this podcast to have the examples a bit more integrated with the lesson as a whole. I also find this to be a great resource for focusing on pronunciation! Episodes are 5-8 minutes long.

Vocabulary

Despite the title of this podcast, I highly recommend listening to it while awake and alert. This podcast might seem a bit strange, as it's advertised to be listened to while sleeping and is recorded with binaural beats in the background, but I still find it to be useful, especially if you are wanting a bit of background stimuli while doing chores or other mundane tasks. Each episode focuses on vocabulary in a certain topic (things in the house, animal names, etc.) and repeats the word several times, with a focus on pronunciation and proper syllable emphasis. I'd recommend using it as a refresher or as practice in quickly remembering vocabulary. Episodes can be quite long, ranging from 1-4 hours.
This podcast has it all! Every episode focuses on a specific piece of vocabulary, then uses it in the context of a sentence. The focus is not just on memorizing a word, but understanding how it fits into a sentence and what it truly translates as. The podcast offers a paid membership for further examples and resources, but is completely free to listen to on Spotify. Episodes are 2-3 minutes long.

Immersion

Momoko provides podcast episodes that are accessible for beginners and advanced learners alike! Each podcast focuses on a specific concept, either it be conversation topics or grammar concepts, and are fully in Japanese. Momoko provides transcripts for each episode, which can be found here. The Momoko to Nihongo podcast can be quite interactive, with conversation practice, quizzes and so much more! There are a variety of podcast styles, with episodes ranging anywhere from 2 minute concept lessons to 20 minute conversations or storytelling.
This podcast focusing around small talk may be a better fit for more advanced learners, but can serve as a fantastic opportunity for not just language learning, but also as a resource for learning about modern day Japanese popular culture and media. Episodes focus on a topic, ranging from Japanese pubs to living a single life while job hunting, and provide a unique insight into colloquial Japanese language and conversation. Episodes are fully in Japanese, and scripts can be accessed on the blog website here. The website is a great resource, not just for the transcripts! Resources include vocabulary lists from the different episodes, links to the topics discussed (music, businesses, etc.) and so much more! Episodes range from 20 to 45 minutes.
This is a unique one, as it not only focuses on Japanese learning through immersion, but does so at a slower speed. I found this incredibly useful, as it allows for more in-depth understanding of sentence structure and pronunciation while listening. Mochifika also provides scripts that can be used for an extra comprehension tool, and can be found here. I wouldn't recommend always listening to this podcast at the original speed, as it won't properly showcase how everyday Japanese sounds, but is still a great starting tool nonetheless! Spotify has the option to play podcasts at different speeds, which can greatly expand the accessibility and uses of Japanese learning podcasts, whether something needs to be slowed down or sped up! Slow Japanese episodes range from 5-9 minutes.
